# Search overview

> Direct document search paired with an interactive knowledge graph.

The Search page finds passages across your datasets and shows *how* your knowledge connects. It pairs a ranked results list with an interactive knowledge graph of the entities and relationships Ocho extracted from your documents.

## What you see

- **Before you search** — the page shows the **dataset map**: one cell per

dataset, sized by document count, with the dataset name and a green check   on each selected cell. Deselecting datasets in the picker dims their cells   rather than hiding them. Clicking a cell dives into that dataset's full   knowledge graph — but only for datasets that have a graph on Search;   "no graph" cells don't respond to clicks. A **Back to map** button   (top left) returns you to the map.

- **Searching** — search runs automatically as you type into the

**Search across selected datasets…** box; there is no Search button. Typing   a couple of characters also opens a suggestions popover with **Entities**   (with mention counts) and **Documents** — clicking an entity suggestion   opens its detail view, and clicking a document suggestion opens that   document in a new tab. (Pressing Enter doesn't pick a suggestion — click   the one you want.)

- **While you search** — the page splits into a graph pane and a results pane

(headed **RESULTS**). The graph automatically drills into the top result's   dataset and focuses that document's node. Hover a result card to light up   its document node in the graph. You can resize the panes with the   **30/70 split**, **50/50 split**, and **70/30 split** buttons at top right;   your choice is remembered.

- **Result cards** offer two actions: **Open source** and **Chat about this**

(clicking elsewhere on the card does nothing).

- **Open source** opens the same source viewer used by chat citations. For

PDF sources the matched passage is highlighted on the rendered page; for   markdown sources you get a one-line excerpt summary above the document   instead of an in-document highlight. A mini-graph sits in the left sidebar   above two tabs: **Graph neighbors** and **Search results** — the latter is   an editable mini-search prefilled with your query, listing related passages   across datasets.

## When is a dataset searchable?

Search needs a dataset that is fully built — draft datasets don't appear in the picker at all. A knowledge graph is **not** required to search: datasets show a small "no graph" tag in the picker, but they are still selectable and return results. What the tag reliably means is that the dataset's map cell can't be clicked into a graph (its tooltip reads "No knowledge graph yet"); after a search, the page may still auto-drill into such a dataset and show whatever graph data exists for it. (A dataset can carry the tag here even though its Overview tab shows a built graph.) Graphs are generated manually by a dataset admin from the **Knowledge Graph** card on the dataset's **Overview** tab; see [Knowledge graphs](/docs/library/knowledge-graphs).

## Good to know

- The dataset picker button reads **All datasets** (or **N of M datasets**)

and includes a **Filter datasets…** box; once you deselect a dataset, a   **N of M selected** header row with a **Select all** link appears. You   can't deselect the last remaining dataset, and the picker is hidden while   you're drilled into a single dataset's graph (use **Back to map** first).

- Your search, dataset selection, and focused entity are reflected in the

page URL — the browser Back button retraces your steps, and you can   bookmark or share a search. The query and dataset selection are restored   from a shared URL, but the focused entity is not: the search re-runs and   refocuses the top result.

- Search returns up to 20 passages per query.
- On phones and small screens the graph moves behind a **View graph** button;

the results list takes the full width.
